Seasoned Athlete Podcast
Starting parkour in my late 40s helped me regain pride in what I was physically capable of. Engaging in a sport where I found myself exceeding my own expectations helped me tap into a confidence that spilled over into other areas of my life. Despite how difficult the training was, I kept showing up. And kept showing up. And got better and better. But it got lonely sometimes. During open gym, as I watched folks cheering each other on, I often wished I had more friends who were athletes in their 40s and 50s (especially women)…folks I could laugh and jump and play with…bringing me back to good times on the Mariposa Elementary School playground.
Early in the pandemic when I was on my way to San Jose, I happened to do a Google search for athletes in their 40s and found a podcast called Seasoned Athlete hosted by Robin Legat, former roller derby athlete turned Spartan racer in her 40s. I started listening to her podcast in 2021 and was hooked by her enthusiasm and how inspiring her guests were—all athletes over 40. Legat does a great job of discussing various topics including: the importance of rest and recovery; not making fitness all about weightloss and changing one’s body; and what perimenopausal and menopausal athletes should know when working out. Not only did this inspire me to reclaim my power and strength as a woman and as an athlete, but it also gave me good tips on how to best take care of myself along the way. Here are some of my favorite episodes:
Episode 82: Living an Athletic Life Through Menopause with Selene Yeager (host of Hit Play, Not Pause: Feisty Menopause Podcast.)
Episode 110: Overtraining Signs, Symptoms, and Prevention
Episode 112: Women Are Not Small Men with Dr. Stacey Sims (author of Roar)
Episode 115: Weightloss Isn’t The Only Reason to Work Out
Episode 120: Stop Making Fitness Just About Changing Your Body
Episode 121: Race Refueling and Recovery Tips
